Feast of the Assumption

I recently attended a principals’ network meeting at Assumption College, Kilmore, named for tomorrow’s feast day for Our Lady being taken to heaven both body and soul. Mary provides for us the ultimate model of discipleship in not just her dedication to her son, Jesus, but also through her belief in Him. It was Mary who urged Jesus to perform his first miracle at the Wedding of Cana (Jn 2:1-12) even though Jesus believed “My hour has not yet come”. Our Lady provided both the support and challenge for our Lord to begin this part of his public ministry.

As parents, you guide your children daily to grow in faith, love, and purpose, which similarly requires challenges at times to ensure they can be their best selves. Mary’s life serves as a model of profound trust and hope for our families. This feast encourages us to look beyond daily routines and find the extraordinary in our ordinary moments. We thank all mothers and families for partnering with us to nurture these values in your children.

Grease - CONGRATULATIONS!

On closing night, my family and I joined the sell-out crowd in the joyous Mahon theatre as we jived along with and admired the talented students in our College production, Grease. Congratulations to the huge cast, backstage and lighting crew, live pit band and staff involved on a truly joyful night, a great celebration of the many hours of rehearsals across the last 6 months. Focus on Literacy

Last Friday, our staff professional learning day focussed on literacy across the curriculum. Improving literacy is one the goals of our Annual Action Plan, with both external and internal experts working with staff in our continual quest to improve student learning.

Trial adjustment to presentations standards

At Aquinas College, our uniform and presentation expectations are an important part of maintaining a positive and inclusive learning environment. Student presentation is an important part of how they represent our college both on and off campus, as a measure of respect for themselves and our community and in preparation for the vast majority of workplaces that have uniform / dress standards and/or set expectations for presentation. One element that has been raised by a number of families and senior students is the current expectation that all students are clean shaven. In conversation with a number of families, our student leaders, College middle leaders and our School Advisory Council (SAC), we recognise there are changing standards in a number of workplaces as well as in some like-schools.

As a result of this consultation, the College Leadership Team supports trialling a change to our student presentation expectations to permit students to have facial hair, provided that it is neat, tidy and appropriate for the College environment. Further details will be outlined to families in a letter to be emailed early next week.

Term 3 Reminders

As we continue Term 3, we would like to remind families of several important College expectations that support student safety, learning and a positive College environment.

New Bathroom Process – commencing Wednesday 19 August

From Wednesday 19 August, students who need to use the bathroom during class time will follow the new bathroom access process. Students will first request permission from their teacher, who will record a class pass in SIMON. The student will then attend D or I Building Reception, or the ARC, to collect a bathroom access lanyard. The lanyard provides access to the designated bathroom nearest that location and must be returned before the student returns to class.

This process is intended to support student safety, reduce unnecessary time away from learning and ensure our bathrooms are safe and inclusive spaces that all students feel comfortable accessing.

Uniform and Presentation

We also ask families to support students in meeting our College uniform expectations. Students should attend school in academic uniform each day unless they have PE, Dance or EISM. PE uniforms should not be worn simply for convenience.

When wearing PE uniform, students must wear the correct Aquinas PE pants. We have also noticed a trend of students wearing track pants significantly oversized, resulting in the legs hanging over their shoes. Students are then walking on the hems and zips, causing the zips to become crushed or broken. We ask families to ensure track pants are appropriately sized and sit above the ground to prevent damage and ensure students present safely and neatly.

Students are also reminded that visible nose piercings are not permitted under College presentation expectations.

We appreciate the support of families in reinforcing these expectations at home. Consistency between home and school helps ensure our expectations are clear and applied fairly across the College.

Launch of World Youth Day

Yesterday I was privileged to attend the launch of WYD (World Youth Day) with some of our EDGE groups. World Youth Day is a week long pilgrimage event where young people from around the world gather together to celebrate their faith. Millions of youth attend and it is seen as a once in a lifetime opportunity.

As part of the launch, our students joined students from other Catholic secondary schools to sing, listen and laugh with Gen Bryant and her group Wave Makers. They shared their experiences from the last WYD which was in Lisbon, Portugal during 2023.

The next WYD, in 2027, will be held in South Korea and the Melbourne Archdiocese is once again planning to send a contingent of students, youth ministers, teachers and clergy to participate in the event. More information will be out in the coming weeks for those who may be interested in participating.

 Over the coming week, the school community celebrates student achievement across Semester One. Congratulations to every student recognised for effort and improvement across Semester One, to those who achieved the highest average in their classes, and to our Top Achievers.

These awards highlight excellent results, but most importantly, they represent the habits and behaviours behind those results.

There is often a misconception about the achievement awards - that they only go to the smartest. Achievement is rarely, solely about intelligence. Students who achieve at the highest level are curious. They ask: How does this work? Why does it work? Where does this connect to what I already know? What else can I learn?

Excellence is wrapped up in the effort to turn up each day, the willingness to find a way into a difficult task, to arrive prepared, positively reacting to others who try things in front of the class, showing curiosity in more than just a favourite topic.

To our award recipients: congratulations.

To every student: keep asking questions, keep practising, keep turning up, and keep challenging yourself to take risks in your learning. Investing in these habits creates excellence.

Certificates for Top of Class and Year Level Highest Achievers will be coming home across the next week. Electronic copies will be available on PAM alongside the assessment reports in the coming fortnight. Students recognised for Effort and Improvement will receive their digital certificates on PAM in the same location.

 Our upcoming year level excellence assemblies on Thursday 20th August are an opportunity to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our students; both inside and outside the classroom. It is a chance to recognise those who have demonstrated a consistent commitment to excellence throughout Semester 1.

Students who achieved an average of more than 90% across their Semester 1 subjects will receive an Excellence Award. This is a significant achievement and reflects much more than academic ability. It requires excellent time management, allowing students to balance their learning, commitments and responsibilities effectively. It also requires effort and perseverance as well as a strong work ethic.

While we proudly celebrate academic excellence, we also recognise the importance of progress. Every student’s learning journey is unique, and we are delighted to acknowledge the significant growth and progress many students have made throughout Semester 1.

We look forward to celebrating the dedication, achievement and progress of our students at the upcoming excellence assemblies.

Over the past two weeks, students have been settling into a rhythm as we approach the halfway mark of the term. As Year 12s, we are in the busy period of SACs as we begin to finish off content and move through our last area of studies. We recently discovered that, as Year 12s, we only have 35 days of school left and it really puts into perspective how close we are to the finish line. It reinforces the last chance we have to leave a mark on Aquinas and so we encourage Year 12s, but also everyone to take this as an opportunity to really consider how they can help contribute to the culture we have at Aquinas. Every student has the opportunity to make a difference, and the small actions we take each day can have a lasting impact on the people around us.

Students in Years 8-11 have been focused on subject selection as they begin to think about what they would like to focus their learning on next year and the years to come after that. For us that has been a nostalgic experience. It has also been rewarding to now be in a position where we can offer advice and encouragement to younger students going through the same process. Having experienced the uncertainty that can come with choosing subjects and thinking about the years ahead, we understand how valuable it can be to hear from students who have already been through it. We hope that by sharing our experiences, we can help younger students feel more confident in their decisions and remind them that there is no single pathway to success.

As we move further into the term, there is plenty for every year level to look forward to. With Year 12s approaching the final stages of their schooling and younger students making decisions that will shape their learning in the years ahead, this is an important time for reflection, growth and looking towards the future. We hope that everyone continues to support one another, embrace the opportunities available to them and play their part in making Aquinas a welcoming and positive community.

Special Visitors in the School Grounds!

Special visitors made an appearance in the Aquinas College grounds this week, with students and staff spotting a beautiful Gang-gang Cockatoo (Callocephalon fimbriatum).

The Gang-gang Cockatoo is a distinctive Australian cockatoo, easily recognised by its small, stocky body, wispy crest, broad wings and short tail. The adult male has a striking scarlet-red head and crest contrasting with a slate-grey body, while females have a dark grey head and beautifully barred feathers edged with pink and yellow.

Gang-gang Cockatoos are seasonal travellers. During summer, they are generally found in taller mountain forests and woodlands, before moving to lower elevations and more open woodland during winter. This seasonal movement means they can sometimes be spotted in suburban areas, where they feed on fruits and seeds in trees and gardens.

Did you know that Gang-gang Cockatoos almost always use their left foot to hold their food while eating?

Sadly, the Gang-gang Cockatoo is endangered, with habitat destruction and climate change contributing to its decline. Recent bushfires across Victoria have also had a significant impact on their habitat and food sources.

Seeing a Gang-gang Cockatoo at Aquinas is a wonderful reminder that our College grounds are part of the broader environment and can provide valuable habitat and food for native wildlife.

Keep your eyes and ears open - you never know who might visit the school grounds next!

On 5 August, Eve Kelly, Chloe McPhedran, Amelia Watson and Yas Soleimani represented Aquinas College at the Saint Vincent’s Student Conference, held at the particularly distant Our Lady of Sion College, in Box Hill.

After learning how to operate the bus, the girls arrived at the conference, which brought together students from schools across Melbourne to explore themes of social justice, service and community involvement.

Our students had the opportunity to connect with other schools and other students from years 7 to 12 from as far afield as Epping and the Mornington Peninsula. Through conversations, activities and shared experiences, students exchanged ideas and reflected on how they can make a positive difference within their schools and the wider community.

We are particularly proud of the way they represented Aquinas throughout the day. Many thanks to Eve, Chloe, Amelia and Yas for their enthusiasm, commitment to social justice and willingness to contribute to the wider community.

A group of Year 9 and Year 10 French students had the opportunity to represent Aquinas College last week at the Soirée Trivia at Sacré-Coeur, demonstrating their understanding of French language and culture. The night was organised to give students the opportunity to speak French through a meaningful and authentic experience.

This experience was incredibly beneficial for students, allowing them to interact with other learners of French from across Melbourne. Aquinas College joined 15 other Melbourne schools, with nearly 150 students taking part in the event, making for a fantastic night of friendly competition, cultural celebration, and language in action.

What a lovely way to spend a night! Last Friday night, me and five others competed in French-related trivia categories, such as history, gastronomy and language. We even feasted on some delicious snacks, and were provided free moustaches for our enjoyment and French euphoria. All language lovers should consider participating in the French Trivia Night, and it's a great way to spend time with your peers and be immersed in Melbourne's French-speaking community. Nate O. My friends and I decided to use the opportunity provided by the soirée to create an occasion out of the day. At the soirée, we were grouped with four others, Year 9s from a local high school. We worked collaboratively on the questions, everyone contributed to our answers. Apart from the trivia questions, there was also a competition around drawing. The tables were covered with durable paper, and we were encouraged to decorate all that we could with the pencils provided, which left us with many wonderful drawings and sketches. Overall, the whole day was incredibly worthwhile, and I wholly recommend it to anyone interested in the future. Clare B. Year 10

On Monday during Lunch we held a Staff VS Students Dodgeball Competition as a task for our VET Sport Class. It was a lot of fun to see our favourite Teachers play off against our fellow students in what I am sure was a cathartic session for both parties. It was a close game but ended on a staff victory by 1 point. Thanks to everyone who participated and helped out.- Joel T

Yr2 VET Sport, Aquatics and Recreation students have been studying a unit focused on planning and delivering Recreation Sessions.

They need to demonstrate the use of multiple forms of communication to participants, organise equipment & resources, establish roles & responsibilities and modify the session according to a range of factors.

We have groups preparing a 3V3 Basketball Tournament, a Soccer Penalty Shoot Out, a Volleyball Match between Year Levels and a Longest Kick Competition.

Kiara, Sean, Joel and Lucas should be incredibly proud of their efforts in organising their Session this past Monday. They not only brought together a large number of students and staff members, but managed to assign a special referee for the match in Mr Broadbent.

Our Languages students have once again demonstrated outstanding dedication and skill, achieving brilliant results in the recent Education Perfect Languages Competition. Competing against students from around the globe, Aquinas College placed an impressive 39th out of 929 schools worldwide, a remarkable achievement that reflects the hard work, commitment, and passion our students bring to language learning.

Congratulations to Alex T in Year 8, who placed 4th in Victoria in the Education Perfect Languages Competition for French, answering over 24,000 questions in just one week. Alex worked incredibly hard to achieve this result, and his dedication and enthusiasm for languages truly shine through his achievement. This is a wonderful reflection of the passion he brings to his learning, and we are so proud of him. He proved that when there is a will, there is a way. Félicitations!

I recently engaged in Education Perfect’s Victorian Language Championships. This was an exciting experience where I completed as many questions as I could over a week, choosing French for myself as I learn it here at the college. I found I quite enjoyed all the new content I learned, particularly verbs and sports vocabulary. Moving forward, I find I am grasping concepts in my classes at an improved pace and have found some of the topics I learnt in the competition appearing in my schoolwork.

I believe it is a wonderful opportunity for any student to participate in the future as you can choose any language of your choice and be driven to learn as much as you wish. It isn’t just about how “good” you perceive yourself to be at a language; rather, it is about the dedication you have to strive for your best, whether that be mastering the basics or challenging yourself with new topics.

The new semester is a quarter done as you read this. The 2026 college theme taken from St Paul’s letters is ‘One Body in Christ’. This reminds us that we are all connected and need to respect each other in both our abilities and diversity. Our faith dimension is being continually challenged to respond to many events grabbing our time, emotions and thoughts of ‘how to respond’ to our world today. Together, we can navigate these challenges with a sense of confidence and calmness that our faith informs us to continue the mission of Jesus, the Apostles and St Paul to proclaim the Good News.

God of Unity, through your Church you are with us,

With one eye on unity and the other on hope, we can achieve much. It is our job to ‘proclaim hope’ to this generation in all that concerns them. We are a People of Hope and it is our work to make God present here and now in our daily work and lives when we are with family, friends and community members. Following are some ways in which that is happening in the Religion Learning Area.

Year 7

Year 7 classes have been investigating the origins of the Hebrew heroes of the Old Testament, with research into the stories of Genesis and Exodus. The second topic will focus on the Ministry of Jesus Christ.

Year 8

Year 8 have been investigating the political, social, linguistic and historical origins of Mary the Mother of Jesus. The demands on a young girl betrothed for marriage are difficult to understand in our era. Getting into that time and culture is difficult, but they are doing a great job. The story is full of HOPE!

Year 9

Year 9 students have been working on the sacraments of reconciliation and anointing of the sick. It gives the students an opportunity to reflect on the health of their own relationships and how our social connectedness does rely on our ability to develop and maintain loving and respectful relationships and confront the times when we ‘miss the mark’ in our daily interactions and actions.

Year 10

10 RE Philosophy students have been gaining wisdom by learning philosophical terms. We will move next into two big questions that philosophers continue to debate: What is Real?; How can evil and God exist together?. Thomas Aquinas’ five arguments for the existence of God round out the year.

Year 11

EDGE: Both 10 and 11 classes participated in a retreat and a workshop led by YMT Melbourne. Students shared their prepared ice breakers with YMT as they prepare to lead a Grade 6 retreat in Term 4.

11 VCE R&S: Sherene Hassan, from Islamic Museum will present to the Year 11 students Islamic Ethics. Sherene is an engaging speaker who is passionate about her faith life and conveys a positive message of Islam to the students who are required to investigate two religious traditions from an ethical perspective.

Year 12 Seminar

Our Year 12 cohort have participated in inspirational and hope-filled seminar sessions throughout the year. Some of the presenters include:

• Zoe Australia on child slavery and forced marriage
• Scott Darlow on First Nation discussions
• Michelle Newland on Acquired Brain Injuries and young people in aged care facilities

MACS World Youth Day ‘27 Launch - 13 August

Students involved in our college faith ministries were invited to the launch of MACS World Youth Day programme. This will involve a series of events that will lead up to the actual event that will see hundreds of thousands of young people celebrating their faith journey in Seoul South Korea over eight days and culminating in a pontifical Mass. Thursday’s sessions will focus on:

I am excited to announce that one of our AGiLE groups, Maya and Lucy in Year 7, were named runners-up for Best Doco in the Doco in a Day Competition. While official participation numbers for 2026 have not yet been announced, more than 250 students across 89 teams competed nationally in 2025, highlighting the scale of the competition and making Maya and Lucy’s achievement particularly impressive.

The students will receive an award recognising their achievement in the coming weeks. Their success is a wonderful reflection of the creativity, commitment and teamwork they brought to their project.

Congratulations to Maya and Lucy on this fantastic result, and to all of our AGiLE teams who participated in the event and represented the school so enthusiastically.

Learning Enhancement Coordinator (Agile)

On August 5th, twelve students from Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 came together in two enthusiastic teams to take part in the national Write a Book in a Day challenge. In just 9.5 hours, the students collaborated to write, illustrate and publish a complete story—while also raising funds for kids’ cancer research.

Each team was given a set of unique parameters to guide their creativity, including specific characters, a setting, and key words that had to be woven into the plot. The challenge tested not only their imagination, but also their ability to work together under time pressure. From brainstorming storylines to sketching illustrations and editing final drafts, the teams showed outstanding persistence, creativity and teamwork.

At the end of the day, both groups proudly submitted their finished books to the national competition, knowing their efforts will bring joy to children in hospital as well as contribute to a worthy cause. It was a day full of laughter, problem-solving, and storytelling magic—a wonderful example of students using their talents to make a difference.

Learning Enhancement (AGiLE) Coordinator

On Thursday the 30th of July we got the privilege to head to Mount Buller for the day to learn to snowboard. From the start of the session we all were pretty horrible to be honest, but as the day moved on we all got better and better. The overall experience was like nothing I’ve done before, being able to experience the snow in general and to snowboard down the mountains was exhilarating. We learnt a lot about safety in how important safety gear can be. I want to thank the staff that attended: Mr Davidson, Mrs Campiciano and Mr Harrington for making the day happen. - Cleo H.

Our Sport and Recreation class spent the day at Mt Buller for a snowboarding excursion, and it was fun as well as a great learning experience. It was a big day - at school by 6 and not home until 8.30! Our snowboarding lesson was well structured, with the instructor breaking skills into simple steps and giving helpful feedback. Even though most of us had never snowboarded before, everyone's skill progression improved throughout the day. These skills will be useful in future Sport & Rec work, especially in coaching and session delivery. Thank you to Mr Harrington, Ms Campiciano and Mr Davidson for organising and attending the excursion, it was such a fun day! - Milli C.

The Snow Day was a really fun experience, and I enjoyed every part of it. The Mount Buller Staff were super helpful and friendly, making sure everyone knew how to use the equipment safely. The lesson itself taught me a lot about coaching, especially how important it is to communicate clearly and encourage everyone, no matter their skill level.
I’ve definitely seen how much my skills have progressed through this experience. I learnt that coaching isn’t just about giving instructions but about creating a positive environment where everyone feels confident to try new things. I also learnt how facilitating groups requires patience and good leadership. Additionally, I gained a better understanding of WHS (Work Health and Safety), reminding myself how crucial it is to keep everyone safe during activities. In the future, I can definitely use what I learnt in sport, especially in coaching or leading activities. Thanks so much to the staff for organising everything and helping out; it made the day run smoothly! - Summer R.

Going to the snow with my VET Sport and Rec class was the highlight of my year so far. We had an hour-long lesson where we were able to find our feet and practice some very basic skills of snowboarding. Shortly after that, we had heaps of free time, and we were able to get some food and go show off our skills on the mountain. Whilst being on the mountain, I realised how important safety is. When going down the slopes as a beginner, it was very likely that we would fall off, and with many other members of the public around, keeping my helmet on at all times was extremely important for my safety in case of a fall. Making sure that my friends and I were able to have the most fun and still remain safe at the same time. Overall, it was such an amazing experience to spend with some of my closest friends. - Imogen P.

Subject Selection Expo

The Subject Selection Expo was held on Thursday 6 August, providing students with an opportunity to explore subject options, view displays and speak with subject teachers. Students and parents in Years 8–10 also met with their Mentor teachers to discuss performance and future choices. The event was a great success, with strong engagement from students and families.

Careers Expo

The Careers Expo was once again held alongside the Subject Selection Evening for the second consecutive year, providing students with the opportunity to engage with a diverse range of university, TAFE and industry representatives.

The afternoon featured targeted presentations from Deakin University and Swinburne University for our Year 11 students, while students across all year levels had the opportunity to explore their chosen pathways and gain valuable insights into future study and career options.

It was a highly successful event, and we look forward to welcoming our representatives back next year.

That’s a Wrap… (Well, Almost!)

As our musical season officially comes to a close, we look back with immense pride and delight at everything our talented cast, crew and band have accomplished. This year’s sell-out production of Grease was a resounding triumph—showcasing brilliant comedic acting, high-energy choreography, and unforgettable vocal performances that still have us humming the soundtrack weeks later!

Special thanks to the PACE network for running the “Aquinas Diner” pre-show and at interval in the foyer, The Maintenance team for assistance with backstage tasks in preparation for the season, staff who assisted with supervision during the performances and any last minute odd jobs, and all those we acknowledged in the program - your efforts are truly appreciated!!

Throughout our year-long preparation and during the live shows, our students truly brought the Spirit of Aquinas values to life:

• Stewardship: Older and more experienced students actively mentored and guided younger peers, building a supportive environment on and off stage.
• Justice: The team demonstrated equity and individual awareness, ensuring everyone’s unique role and voice were valued.

• Compassion: Cast and crew showed deep care and support for one another through demanding rehearsals and show nights.
• Perseverance: Everyone brought dedication to each performance, continuously learning and improving with every show.
• Belonging: Above all, students created a strong sense of community, working together to turn months of hard work into a true musical masterpiece.

We are looking forward to our upcoming Company celebration in a few weeks to officially celebrate our achievements, present some special awards and reflect on these wonderful memories together!

Coffee for a cause

Our Year 11 VET Hospitality students put their skills to good use today, serving coffee for a gold coin donation alongside our WTTC staff.

The initiative helped use up milk before it went to waste, while raising funds for the Opening the Doors Foundation and supporting its work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

A great example of hospitality, sustainability and social justice coming together.
