Fathers Day

This Sunday we celebrate Father’s Day, a day to thank our fathers and significant male role models who have nurtured and supported us. At baptism, special blessings are offered for both mother and father of the child. This Father's Day, we offer the blessing for fathers:

God is the giver of all life, human and divine. May he bless the father of this child. He and his wife will be the first teachers of their child in the ways of faith. May they be also the best of teachers, bearing witness to the faith by what they say and do, in Christ Jesus our Lord.

As an Aquinas community, we have the chance to celebrate and give thanks for the fathers and male role models in our lives and those no longer with us at our Term 3 Community Mass this Wednesday 10 September. All are welcome to join us in the College chapel from 7.30pm and for supper afterwards.

Year 12 Exam Launch & Practice exams

On Wednesday this week, members of College Leadership met with Unit 3-4 (Year 12) VCE students to launch the exam preparation weeks. While revision and exam preparation is an ongoing part of being a VCE student, many courses are now finished teaching content and purely focused on exams, all of which have a significant effect on each student’s final result. In the second week of the upcoming break, our VCE Unit 3-4 students will sit their Practice examinations. These exams provide vital feedback to staff and each student about the areas they need to focus on most heavily in the lead up to the VCE Examinations in October/November. As next week’s College Assembly will highlight, excellence is not a single action but a continuous practice: it’s about making small, consistent choices every day that align with our goals and values.

Key Dates for end of Term 3 / start of Term 4

Over the past week, our Year Level assemblies have been a wonderful chance to celebrate the hard work and achievements of our students from Semester One. These events recognised not only individual success, but also the effort, persistence and positive attitudes across our school community.

Academic success from Semester One is celebrated three main ways: Effort and Improvement, Top of Class and Top of Year Level.

Effort and Improvement Awards are teacher-nominated awards, and occur at the conclusion of each semester. These awards recognise the effort demonstrated by students in the classroom and reflect the improvement in attitude and learning behaviours leading to progress in their classwork and achievement.

Top of Class Awards are based on assessment results and presented to the highest-achieving student in each subject, based on results across the semester.

Top Ten Awards recognises the ten highest-achieving students in each year level across all subjects in the semester.

Special awards at the assembly included acknowledging Year 10 students: Jayla Pham, Madison Stride and Sophie Hyam who have been invited to join the Monash Scholars Program. An academic program offered by Monash to develop students' study skills and future pathways planning. And Jimmy Volombello, Lucy Maxwell and Amelia Hartlet for their commitment and achievement shown in their work placement during Yr11 VCE VM program. These students have demonstrated excellent work ethic and enthusiasm to learn, laying the foundation of successful careers in their chosen industry.

It was also inspiring to see students’ performances throughout the award ceremony, showcasing their talents in dance and music. The audience’s appreciation for their peers’ performances was evident in their attentive stillness during the acts and their enthusiastic applause afterward.

The Years 10 and 11 Excellence Assemblies were a true highlight, with students being recognised for their effort and achievement across Semester One. The Top Ten students from the year levels were acknowledged on stage for their outstanding results and commitment.

Congratulations to all students for their efforts and dedication in Semester One! Your hard work and commitment have not gone unnoticed, and we are truly proud of your achievements. We now look forward to celebrating excellence further during the whole school on Tuesday.

  In last week’s THRIVE session, Middle Years students focused on two important life skills: organisation and time management. With end-of-term assessments and deadlines approaching now is the ideal time to develop strategies to stay on top of schoolwork. These skills are transferable which will hopefully set students up for success outside of school.

One strategy that we explored was the use of a study chart. This is a simple and effective way to map out weekly tasks and allocate time to complete them. The chart helps balance homework and extra-curricular activities but also provides a sense of accomplishment when you tick off completed tasks. An example can he seen below:  

 We also discussed distractions, particularly mobile phones. It’s incredibly tempting to check messages while doing homework but even quick glances can break focus. Our advice? Keep your phone in a different room while working. You will work more efficiently and produce better-quality results. Win, win!

It is important to place the study chart somewhere visible such as the fridge (I visit there regularly) or a pinboard. This keeps you accountable and helps family members support your efforts.

Students filled out their study chart and hopefully brought it home to show you. Copies of study charts will be left at the Middle Years Reception and outside the Year 9 Team Leaders office for the remainder of the year. There is no time like the present to work on building habits and routines!

Our Intermediate and Senior Concert Bands attended the Victorian School Music Festival last week, both being awarded Silver for their performances. Congratulations to the students for preparing their works to such a high standard, and for their positive and cheerful attitude on the day.

On Monday 8th September we are holding one of our major annual performances: The Senior Showcase, in the Peter Box Gymnasium at 7pm.

All families are welcome to come and watch our Senior Ensembles in one of their final events for the year. They are also supported by instrumental students from across all year levels, and the Dance Ensemble, for the always-epic Massed Finale.

It has been an awesome last full term of high school. Many of our subjects have now completed their subject courses for Units 3 and 4 and are in preparation for our exam, which is now just around the corner.

We have been having the important conversations around the effort, determination and perseverance required and expected of us during these challenging periods. A key focus has been “What can we start to do NOW to prepare ourselves best for these next 8 weeks?”

We have all been challenged to complete one practice exam for each of our subjects, a week to give the most exposure to the conditions and questions in our exams.

Ms Crawley and Ms Alger shared with us the “4 A” expectations which we will be focusing on:

Attendance - being on time and present for: class, appointments, meetings and school.

Attention- paying attention: in class, in practice, when teachers help you and in extra activities

Adherence - to teacher directions in: class, cycle plans, practice exams and completing work. Trusting that our teachers have the skills and knowledge that will benefit us best.

Application - finding time out of class, application of skills and practice exams, sacrificing things to make time and prioritising output.

On Monday, the 25th of August, we had our second last dress-up day with the theme “ Dress up as your childhood dream job”.

It was so wonderful to see all the creativity in the costumes as well as an insight to some of our childhood big dreams. Some of the common careers were nurses, vets, athletes and popstars.

As we journey towards these last moments, it's important to keep an open and positive mindset to reach our full potential. We encourage you all to continue to apply yourself and become the best version of yourself by setting goals and aspirations you are committed to reach.

Fair Trade Fair – Friday 12th September

Our annual Fair Trade Fair is coming up soon! In addition to being a fun way to raise funds for our Term 3 charity focus, the fair is also a great opportunity for students to learn what Fairtrade really means by exploring fair working conditions, a liveable wage, and how to make ethical and sustainable choices as consumers. A focus on these topics will be part of our homeroom and mentor program next week as we prepare for the activities on Friday.

Season of creation

September is the Season of Creation, a time for Christians and especially Catholics around the world to reflect on God’s gift of creation. It invites us to pray, care for the earth, and make choices that protect our common home. Together as families, we are called to live out our faith by caring for creation with hope and action.

National Threatened Species Day – Sunday 7 September

Did you know there may be threatened animals and plants living right near you? You can explore what species need protection in your area by using WWF-Australia’s My Backyard tool. It’s a great way to learn more about your local environment and how we can all help care for it.

Why 7 September?

On 7 September 1936, the last known Tasmanian Tiger (also called a thylacine) died in Hobart Zoo. This was the moment the species officially became extinct.

Sixty years later, in 1996, National Threatened Species Day was created to mark this date. It reminds us how important it is to protect the incredible animals and plants that still live in Australia today.

What you can do:

• Discover which threatened species live near you.
  
• Reflect on the story of the thylacine and why it matters.
• Act by making small changes at home and in the community to help protect wildlife.

Together, we can make sure more species don’t slip into extinction.

Get Involved! Aquinas College Threatened Species Bake Off 2025 – A pop of Colour.

The Threatened Species Bake Off is a fun, creative way to learn about and support Australia’s endangered wildlife. Each year, bakers of all ages design cakes and edible creations that represent threatened animals or plants, helping to raise awareness of their habitats, the challenges they face, and the importance of conservation.

The Bake Off is also an opportunity to celebrate the work of conservation efforts. Families and students can explore ideas, get inspired, and even join in by visiting: https://www.dcceew.gov.au/about/news/ready-set-bake-off-back-2025

Aquinas will running our own competition, starting on Tuesday 9th until Thursday 18th September. Students can bake a cake and upload a photograph or bring the cake in for judging. Stay tuned to SIMON messages for more information.

English in Term 3: Building Skills and Fostering a Love of Reading

As Term 3 draws to a close, the English Learning Area is proud to reflect on the achievements of our students and the exciting initiatives that have shaped the term. From senior students honing their analytical writing to younger cohorts building confidence as readers, this has been a term that highlights both growth and passion across English.

Year 12: Targeted Support for Success

For our senior students, Term 3 is a critical time in preparing for their end-of-year English examinations. One highlight of the term was a specialised We Have Always Lived in the Castle workshop, designed to give students targeted support in approaching their upcoming text response SAC.

The session was divided into two groups: a Foundations & Confidence stream for students still consolidating text knowledge and essay writing, and an Extension & Excellence stream for those ready to refine high-level responses. Teachers worked intensively with students to break down essay topics, practise close passage analysis, and connect textual evidence to authorial intent. By working with scaffolds, prompts, and collaborative activities, students left the session with concrete strategies to take into their assessment preparation.

This workshop reflected our core aim in English: to meet students where they are and help them take the next step forward, no matter their starting point.

How Families Can Support Year 12s at Home

As our Year 12s head toward their final exams, families often ask how they can best support their child’s preparation in English. While teachers provide strategies and targeted workshops at school, there are some simple and powerful things parents can do at home:

• Encourage routine practice. Having a consistent time set aside for writing or reading passages at home helps students build stamina and confidence. Even short, regular bursts of practice can make a big difference.
• Be a sounding board. Invite your child to explain an essay topic to you in their own words. If they can teach it clearly, they usually understand it well themselves.
• Discuss ideas, not just content. English is not only about remembering quotes, it’s about engaging with themes and big ideas. Talking about issues like community, isolation, family, or fear (central to We Have Always Lived in the Castle) helps students make stronger connections in their essays.
• Limit distractions. Creating a quiet, device-free study space communicates the importance of focus and helps them get into a productive routine.
• Provide encouragement. Year 12 can be a stressful time, and confidence matters. Reminding your child of their progress and effort can reduce anxiety and boost performance.

The Power of Reading Beyond the Classroom

While exam preparation is important, at the heart of English lies something much broader and more enduring — a love of reading. Research consistently shows that students who read widely not only perform better academically but also develop stronger empathy, resilience, and imagination. At home, families can support this by:

• Setting aside a quiet, device-free reading time.
• Sharing what you’re currently reading — whether it’s a novel, article, or audiobook.
• Visiting the local library or second-hand bookstore together.
• Encouraging choice: let students explore genres that excite them, even if it’s not “traditional” literature.

Even 15–20 minutes a day can make a significant difference!

Year 9 Physical Education - Empowering Students with Practical Self Defence

As part of our Year 9 Physical Education program, students recently participated in a Self Defence unit delivered by an experienced external instructor. The program focused on developing awareness, harm minimisation, and conflict resolution skills that support students’ personal safety and wellbeing in real-life situations.

Throughout the sessions, students explored scenarios they may encounter within their community and learned practical strategies to manage these effectively. Students were introduced to a range of simple but effective self-defence techniques, such as walking with awareness, setting verbal boundaries, maintaining a non-confrontational stance and distancing, and applying specific strikes (heel-palm, eye, and knee) when escape is necessary.

The program not only developed students’ competence and confidence but also encouraged them to think critically about how to safely remove themselves from unsafe situations and seek help when required. Hopefully these lessons empower our students with lifelong skills that enhance both their independence and wellbeing and they navigate the world around them.

On August 29th, twelve students from Years 7, 8 and 9 came together in two enthusiastic teams to take part in the national Write a Book in a Day challenge. In just 9.5 hours, the students collaborated to write, illustrate and publish a complete story—while also raising funds for kids’ cancer research.

Each team was given a set of unique parameters to guide their creativity, including specific characters, a setting, and key words that had to be woven into the plot. The challenge tested not only their imagination, but also their ability to work together under time pressure. From brainstorming storylines to sketching illustrations and editing final drafts, the teams showed outstanding persistence, creativity and teamwork.

At the end of the day, both groups proudly submitted their finished books to the national competition, knowing their efforts will bring joy to children in hospital as well as contribute to a worthy cause. It was a day full of laughter, problem-solving, and storytelling magic—a wonderful example of students using their talents to make a difference.

LEGO is the universal language

This term, Carvin (Youth Family Centre) and I have been lucky enough to trial a LEGO based social skills group. We worked with a selection of wonderful students from Years 7 to 9 on Tuesday mornings to develop their communication, teamwork and social skills by using LEGO based Therapy. 

LEGO based therapy was developed in 2004 by Daniel LeGoff, a psychologist, who noticed two students on the Autism Spectrum communicating positively over LEGO in his waiting room and as a result developed a therapy program.

Our LEGO based social skills sessions follow a set structure to create familiarity and reduce anxiety: 

• Good News: everyone has the opportunity to tell the group something good that has happened to them during the week
• Structured LEGO builds or Challenges: in teams of 3 students build LEGO constructs under timed conditions
• Individual LEGO builds: and then a show & tell to the group
• Shout Outs: everyone has the opportunity to tell members of the group something positive or something they liked during the session

These LEGO based therapy sessions have been a huge success and Carvin and I have loved seeing and hearing the communication and teamwork develop between the students as the sessions progressed. We would like to thank everyone who has supported this trial project which we hope will continue.

On Tuesday 2nd September 2025, our Year 12 VM Numeracy students took part in an exciting hands-on learning experience, A Day in the City. This excursion was directly linked to the curriculum focus on Recreational Numeracy, specifically Area of Study 5: Dimension and Direction.

Students were challenged to design and carry out their own excursion, applying numeracy skills in real-world contexts. Their task involved careful planning—making bookings, assessing risks, organising timing, and navigating Melbourne’s public transport system to move between three very different destinations.

The day began at the Old Melbourne Gaol, where students listened to stories of former inmates and reflected on Melbourne’s history. From there, they headed to the Queen Victoria Market for a lively scavenger hunt that tested both their problem-solving and navigational skills. The final stop was the Melbourne Aquarium, where timing and teamwork were crucial in ensuring the group arrived as planned.

This experience gave students the opportunity to apply their numeracy knowledge beyond the classroom, highlighting the importance of measurement, direction, and planning in everyday life. The day was a great success, demonstrating how numeracy underpins so many aspects of navigating the world around us.

Our VCE Vocational Major (VM) students had the privilege of taking part in an inspiring Careers Industry Day on Thursday 4th September, where they heard directly from a range of industry experts representing landscaping, plumbing, electrical, policing, beauty, and the local youth employment network, OELLEN. In the lead-up to the event, students created CVs and portfolios to prepare for mock interviews, helping them build confidence and prepare for applying for apprenticeships and traineeships as they continue through the VCE VM program.

The event provided students with valuable insights into the real-world experiences of professionals across diverse fields. Each speaker shared engaging stories about their career journeys, the challenges they overcame, and the opportunities that shaped their path.

A common message emerged from every industry representative: while technical skills and qualifications are important, employers are consistently seeking apprentices and trainees who bring more than just knowledge to the workplace. Passion, motivation, reliability, and above all, strong communication and teamwork skills were highlighted as the qualities that truly set young people up for success.

The Careers Industry Day was not only informative but also motivating for our students, reinforcing the purpose of the VCE VM pathway in preparing them with both practical skills and the personal attributes employers value most.

We thank all of the guest speakers for sharing their time, wisdom, and encouragement with our students, and look forward to continuing to build strong connections between Aquinas College and our wider community.

EISM Season 2 came to a thrilling conclusion on Wednesday 27th August, with our senior students proudly representing the school across multiple grand finals. It was a strong showing from our teams, with Girls Netball B, Girls Volleyball B, Girls Touch, Boys Netball B, Boys Volleyball A, Boys Soccer, and Boys AFL all earning their place in the grand final.

A huge congratulations goes to Boys Netball B, who secured a hard-fought victory over Donvale with a score of 29–26. The team showed excellent teamwork and resilience to come out on top in a closely contested match.

Another outstanding performance came from Girls Volleyball B, who triumphed over Mount Scopus in an intense match, finishing with a score of 3/54 – 2/56. The team’s determination and focus were on full display as they powered through to win the title.

While not all teams walked away with a win, reaching the grand final is an incredible achievement and we commend all our players for their commitment, sportsmanship, and school pride.

Well done to all who participated in Season 2 EISM – your efforts and achievements have made our College proud.

Spirit of Aquinas - Belonging and Spirituality

Last week our year 8s went off on a retreat led by an organisation called Youth Mission Team where they were taught lessons around some of the Aquinas Core Values, such as belonging and spirituality.

They were taught about belonging through a lesson with ‘labels’ and how people shouldn’t be treated based solely on a person's label, but on who they are. Stressing the idea that once you remove a person’s label, only then are you truly able to understand and get to know them. A lesson that they can use when they are in the Aquinas Community, ignoring a label their peers may have and creating new friendships, so that everyone feels they belong.

The core value of spirituality was also prevalent throughout the day in a number of activities. The students were prompted to write down something they were grateful for or wanted to pray for and put it in a basket at the front of the room. Allowing the students to be quietly reflecting with intentionality about the gifts God has given them, and how He will always be there for them.

WOW WOW and a lot more WOW. The year 9 girls’ volleyball team played in the biggest high school sporting event in Victoria, which involved over 2800 government, catholic and independent school students from years 7 to 12. The girls were part of this where they played over 3 days. 

After a slow start on the first day, the team had to win the first game of day 2 to stay in medal contention, which they did. Then they played against the second top side from the opposing pool, won that, and then won the next game. They eventually reached the semi-final against the top side and lost a close one 25:20. 25:20. This meant that they had qualified for the bronze medal play off which they did extremely well by winning in three very close sets. 

The team was wonderful, achieving so much in a short period. Their ongoing behaviour throughout the year has been impeccable and this flowed into the tournament. I often see Aquinas sporting teams to be really quiet when they play against other schools. The year 9 girls VB team was no different during the first day. After some cultural talk about the need to be loud, the girls responded brilliantly during days 2 and 3. They were impulsive, engaging, infectious and very much look at us. We are very loud. They were screaming, high 10’s and stomping their feet on the wooden floor. In addition, they started chanting on the court. This very loud out going exuberance had definitely catapulted the team to lift and play so well.

I have to thank all parents for their continued support of this team as well as to all staff who shared encouraging support before and during the tournament. A special thanks needs to go to two amazing sport’s coaches – Lexie Quinn and Emily Box. They are the Taylor Swift’s of sporting assistance based upon how this team adores them when they coach. They are often mesmerized with their presence and engaging commentary. It was so brilliant to see. 

Overall, it was truly a wonderful effort by these Aquinas Angels. They lifted, they engaged and they were very very very loud. It was such a groovy experience to witness this team over 3 days.

The Aquinas College Legacy Cloak: The Legacy cloak is awarded to member(s) of the ensemble that have shown outstanding initiative, team work, dedication and excellence throughout their participation in the rehearsal and performance process. The 2025 recipients were presented the cloak by last year's winners Sienna and Alex.

Senior students also presented their peers from the cast and crew with special certificates to acknowledge their participation in the production.

Aquinas College is having a Family Mass on Tuesday 13 May at 7.30pm in the Mary MacKillop Chapel. Everyone is welcome.
