On the importance of journeying together: Emmaus & the Long Walk for Reconciliation

At the PAVCSS Principal's conference this week, we have unpacked one of the pivotal biblical stories of the resurrection of the Road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35) in which two disciples encounter the risen Christ, although they initially do not recognise Jesus. The act of accompanying each other on a journey is embodied firstly with the disciples comforting each other in their mutual sorrow at the loss of their friend and leader, followed by welcoming a ‘stranger’ to walk with them who helps them to understand how the Messiah’s passing fulfilled the scriptures. It is only when they then invite the ‘stranger’ to sit with them at a meal together that they recognise the risen Jesus in the breaking of the bread. Upon this revelatory understanding, they again journeyed with each other, rushing back to Jerusalem to share the Good News with the rest of the disciples.

This tradition of walking in shared understanding is part of our Aquinas tradition. Last Monday, we welcomed over 150 representatives from 13 local primary and secondary schools, as well as members of The Long Foundation and Fire Carriers for the Aquinas Long Walk as part of Reconciliation Week (27 May - 3 June). Walking as one alongside each other embodied the 2026 theme ‘All in for Reconciliation’, reflecting both the Emmaus journey and our Christian mission to walk, listen and talk in harmony with all our brothers and sisters. As seems to occur each year, we were blessed that forecast rain held off until after the walk. Raising awareness for Reconciliation Week, we were also privileged to hear from Jack Peris from The Long Walk Foundation about his family’s history and the importance of continuing to educate ourselves, walking side-by-side as partners in reconciliation.

Year 9 - 11 Examinations

Our Year 11 VCE and Year 10 students are less than a week from starting their examinations (11 June), with Year 9 exams to follow shortly afterwards on 17 June. For our Year 9 & 10 students this is their first experience of formal examinations. While these are a concentrated period of assessment, they should be the culmination of 6 months of preparation and study. While debates have raged for many years about the benefits and drawbacks of exams as a form of assessment, the realities of many occupations are that quick decision-making and detailed responses to urgent tasks are commonplace. The pressures of an exam situation help us to retrieve knowledge and demonstrate skills learnt over a long period to determine which are most appropriate to apply under a pressure situation. There are few who relish the months of study to prepare effectively - there’s always a more entertaining distraction - but as E.M. Gray notes:

"The successful person has the habit of doing the things failures don't like to do.

They don't like doing them either, necessarily.

But their disliking is subordinated to the strength of their purpose.”

Updates to Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS) Policies

Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS) has recently reviewed and updated a number of key policies and procedures that apply across all MACS schools, including Aquinas College. These updates ensure that our practices continue to reflect current legislation, regulatory requirements, child safety obligations and best practice in Catholic education.

The updated policies include the Student Behaviour Support Policy and Procedures, Suspension, Negotiated Transfer and Expulsion of Students Procedures, Anaphylaxis Management Policy, Privacy Policy, Privacy Collection Notice for Students and Parents. MACS has also updated its Bullying Prevention Policy and Procedures, strengthening expectations around respectful relationships, student wellbeing and the prevention of bullying, including cyberbullying. These policies emphasise proactive approaches to student safety, wellbeing and engagement, while ensuring clear and fair processes are in place when concerns arise.

At Aquinas College, we are currently reviewing and implementing these updated requirements to ensure our policies and practices remain aligned with MACS expectations. Updated policy documents will be available on the College website, and we encourage all members of our community to familiarise themselves with any changes relevant to them.

The most holy body and blood of Christ

“Anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood has eternal life,” Jn 6: 51 - 58

This Sunday is the feast of Corpus Christi, where we celebrate the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Understanding the concept of transubstantiation is challenging especially when trying to explain this to students. How can something look, feel and taste the same and yet has substantially changed? Faith plays and important role in this.

This weekend reminds us that not only on this Sunday mass, but at every mass we remember the sacrifice Jesus made for us. The paschal lamb, sacrificed by God to create a new covenant with us as the passover sacrifice. The day of solemnity has connections to our own College patron St Thomas Aquinas, who was commissioned by Pope Urban IV to write text and hymns for liturgical celebration, some are still sung today.

So what can we learn or experience from this day? It could be a reminder of our connection with God through Jesus, for others it may be the opportunity to reconnect after absence. The main thing is to remember that we are loved so much that God was willing to sacrifice his son for us. In honouring the body and blood of Christ we take on a part of Jesus in us and with us as we journey on from mass.

As Year 10 and Year 11 students continue preparing for upcoming examinations, families know they play an important role in helping their children approach this period with confidence and balance.

Exams are an opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning for the semester. While achieving strong results is important, developing effective study habits, resilience, and time-management skills are a valuable outcome of the examination process.

Parents can support their child by encouraging the development of a realistic study timetable that includes removal of distractions, regular breaks, physical activity, and adequate sleep. Research consistently shows that students who maintain healthy routines are better able to concentrate, retain information, and manage the natural stress test performance can generate.

Knowing how to revise and study is an element of student wellbeing as it generates a sense of success. Practice questions, self-testing, creating summary notes or mind maps, and explaining concepts to others are all effective ways to strengthen understanding and build confidence. Tests and exams require students to recall learning under timed conditions. Teachers encourage active study strategies rather than simply re-reading notes, providing tasks, practice papers and instruction in retrieval practice. Retrieval practice is where students are required to bring information that they have previously learnt to the front of their mind to answer a question, rather than looking up the information in a textbook or having the teacher explain it again. If students can not recall the required knowledge then these gaps direct areas for students to address in their revision.

As examinations approach, students may experience periods of anxiety or self-doubt. Open conversations at home can help students maintain perspective and focus on their effort and progress rather than solely on outcomes. Celebrating consistency, persistence, and improved application to study can be just as important as celebrating results.

The examination period is a valuable learning experience that prepares students for future academic challenges. With support from both home and direction, feedback and encouragement from school, students can approach their exams feeling prepared, capable, and ready to achieve their best. Please be aware that year level specific exam information will be emailed to parents next week.

As we move towards the end of Semester 1, students have begun an important process of reflecting on their learning, achievements and growth. Reflection is a valuable opportunity for students to recognise their successes, identify areas for improvement and consider the strategies that have supported their progress.

This week, students will have been completing a planning document that will guide them through this reflection process and help them begin setting meaningful and achievable goals for Semester 2. Next week, students will transfer their responses into a Google Form. The reflections and goals they submit will be included in their end-of-semester reports which provide families with insight into their child’s learning journey.

We encourage parents and guardians to discuss this process with their child and remind them to complete this process thoughtfully. Taking the time to engage in reflection and goal setting can help students develop greater ownership of their learning.

The Pastoral team will continue to work closely with students throughout Semester 2, supporting them in developing positive habits, monitoring progress and working towards the goals they have set for themselves.

Tinnies for Vinnies: Week 3 (of 4) Update

We are officially three weeks into our Term 2 drive, and the response from the Aquinas community has been fantastic.

The house rivalry is definitely heating up! A huge shoutout to MacKillop House - thanks to the combined efforts of students, staff, and families, that have contributed.

Collectively, they are currently leading the pack with 272 items with Dominic house not far behind with 215 items donated! You can check out the full breakdown by house and mentor below!

While the competition is a bit of fun, the real impact is where these items are going. Every single can of food, packet of pasta, and toiletry item goes straight to St. Vincent de Paul to help those of us struggling with basic necessities.

If you are able to spare an extra item or two during your next grocery shop, please keep them coming into mentor classes. Thank you so much to everyone who has pitched in so far to put our Catholic values into real, practical action.

World Environment Day is celebrated every year on 5 June. It is the United Nations' biggest day for encouraging people to take action to protect our planet.

"Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future." 2026 Theme. This year’s theme is a call to recognise the central role nature plays in our response to climate change. Healthy landscapes absorb carbon, regulate water, protect coastlines and support the incredible biodiversity that keeps ecosystems functioning. By caring for our environment today, we can help create a safer and more sustainable world tomorrow.

Earlier this fortnight, student leaders across the College came together at our first Summit for 2026. During this event, we discussed future plans and implementations of our ideas, largely focusing on the importance of working as a collective to achieve a shared goal. Student leaders across the school collaborated on many ideas in different areas of the school, such as house spirit, sustainability, social justice, and more. We will have another Leadership Summit in Term 3, to focus on how effective our ideas were and reflect on the processes we followed to achieve our goals. As captains, we wanted to set an example by implementing our own idea. One of these ideas was creating study sessions for younger students led by seniors, helping to emphasise the importance of study skills. We are also working to implement free period supplies in bathrooms and have assembled a team of students to achieve this goal by the end of the year!

The Year 12 Dress Up Day was a success! Following the theme of initials, both first name and surname, our Year 12s dressed up in all sorts of outfits. From Margot Robbie to Tung Tung Tung Sahur, all the way to comic book and movie characters, the creativity presented by our Year 12s was impressive. This being the second dress-up day, we have two more upcoming throughout the year, which we are incredibly excited for. Dressing up as a cohort to commemorate the last months we have in secondary school has been a recurring event for years, bringing us closer through our unique and kooky outfits. We hope to see even more remarkable costumes in the upcoming dress-up days, and we encourage all of you to start thinking about your future outfits.

We also wish our Year 9, 10, and 11 cohorts the best for their upcoming semester exams. This time of year is definitely different to what many of you have experienced; however, we know that your dedication, time, and persistence will pay off.

 This year eleven of our AGiLE students participated in Doco in a Day. This competition requires students to create a short film about a global issue — like gender equality, access to education or sustainability — in just one day. Each year, the theme combines a Catholic Social Thought Principle and a United Nations Sustainable Development Goal, uniting Catholic values with a global issue.

However, it’s not just a learning experience: students use their films to fundraise for life-changing educational opportunities in some of the world’s poorest communities. All money raised during the competition goes directly to the Edmund Rice Foundation who provide access to education in communities who need it most. The Edmund Rice Foundation is currently;

• improving access to education in 6 countries including Australia, Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, the Philippines and Timor Leste.
• involved in 43 education projects — spanning formal education and vocational training, community education and skills building, and advocacy and human rights training.
• specifically working to prioritise gender equality and disability inclusion through formal education, community education and development education,

Last week, students in Years Mannix, McCormack and Rice participated in the first of three alternative program weeks for the year. Students completed the My Melbourne Program — designed to explore Melbourne and develop a range of skills including Communication, Teamwork, Resilience, Navigation and Organisation. Working in small groups, students navigated to a range of themed locations each day and analysed the impact these places have on life in Melbourne.

Daily activities included a tour of the MCG, viewing the city from the top of the Eureka Skydeck, a Road to Zero driving education session, learning about the positive impact of the Big Issue, and exploring how the Yarra River and the Wurundjeri people have lived in and shaped the Melbourne area over time.

Students' ability to handle the daily challenges of getting themselves to the city and working collaboratively was tested constantly — and all rose to meet the obstacles presented. A fantastic week, and a big thank you to all the staff who made the program run so smoothly!

The city experience was a fantastic opportunity to learn how to navigate public transport and explore various landmarks. I truly appreciated the level of independence we had during the experience, along with the organised activities with our groups, such as visiting the MCG and the Eureka Skydeck.

City Experience provided an excellent opportunity to interact with others and discover new parts of Melbourne. It encouraged us to face challenges such as taking the correct public transport and navigating the city. The exciting activities we participated in, including the MCG tour and the Sky Deck visit, were delightful and engaging. I am very grateful to Aquinas College for giving us the opportunity to spend a full week exploring the city.

Year 9 Chisholm, Dominic and MacKillop students enjoyed a fun-filled 3 days of Camp at YMCA Anglesea. They participated in a range of activities including High Ropes, Giant Swing, Vertical Challenge and Mountain Biking. Each student participated in an overnight Hiking Expedition where they pitched a tent and cooked their own dinner on a trangia. Congratulations to each student who stepped out of their comfort zone and demonstrated the College value of Perseverance multiple times throughout each day of Camp. Thank you to the attending staff and past students who supported students to grow and develop. We look forward to Rice, McCormack and Mannix Camp coming up in August.

Student Reflections:

Our Year 9 camp kicked off on Wednesday the 27th with an energized bus ride that saw us arrive just in time for lunch. After a quick tour of the grounds to get our bearings, we dove straight into a rotation of high-adrenaline activities. From the stomach-flipping drops of the giant swing and the heights of the high ropes to the vertical challenge and mountain biking through the trails, there was never a dull moment. It was the perfect way to break the ice, as everyone had a ball pushing their limits and connecting with friends in a completely new environment.

The highlight of the trip began on Thursday morning as we packed our gear for the overnight camp-out. We trekked for about 3-4km, a journey that took us through stunning scenery ranging from the edge of the ocean to rugged bush-bashing up high mountains. Reaching the summit offered an incredible reward with a panoramic view looking down over the town of Anglesea. That night, we experienced the novelty of cooking dinner over Trangias and sleeping in tents, which was a first for many of us. Walking back to the bus on Friday, we all felt a sense of accomplishment, having strengthened our bonds with both our peers and our group leaders through a truly exciting outdoor adventure. - Benjamin T. They camp was great in general. It has caring staff, supportive community and fun activities.
One of my favourite activities were the night walk at the campsite. That was a moment when you really feel that you are in a group with lovely people and friends. That is when I think can bring all the people together the most.
To be honest, there wasn't really anything that I have worried about, that was a pretty chill and fun camp.
Right now, I'm definitely missing a lots of things happened on the camp. Such as the feeling of spending the nights with my mates, doing activities together, and overcome challenges and difficulties together. Also, as I met more people, and had closer friends, the year 9 camp was the best camp I have ever attended.
And now, here is some advice for the next group. When you meet challenges, don't just give up, give it a go, and try to be the best of yourselves. Keep a positive mindset, thinking that I'm going to overcome it, I'm going to be the conqueror. When you are about to give up, just think I'm nearly completed, I just need to do a little bit more. Once you think like that again and again, you will reach the top of mountain eventually.
At last, I want to say a BIG thank you to all the teachers and student leaders. Which out you none of us can have the remarkable camping experience. The only little ask for improvement is if we can have a longer camp, like one week, that would be better, because three days are really short. - James L. Dominic House

The Youth Ministry Team led a full day retreat with our 10 & 11EDGE classes this term. Each class will then participate in workshops that will assist with developing their knowledge and skills to deliver a Youth Retreat to Grade 5 and 6 students as part of the 11EDGE course. The 10EDGE class completed their workshop on small groups on 4 June, while 11EDGE will complete a workshop next term on running ice breakers and delivering faith testimonies. 11EDGE will then get on with planning their retreat for Term 4.

Here are some feedback comments from the retreat participants:

• Retreat theme: ‘The theme for the Edge retreat was life choices. This did work for me as it helped decide about further choices I will make in the future. Additionally it helped me see things from different perspectives. I did find it very beneficial.’
• Icebreakers: ‘They got everyone involved and warmed up to each other before moving into more serious discussions and dramas. They had elements of fun that didn't really have to connect to the theme, but brought us into an environment that was easy to ease into and discuss about the main messages.’
• Drama performance: ‘The drama added a lighter tone to the environment and actually got others involved instead of just watching the youth workers do it for us. Asking us to discuss it was also very good to explore the deeper meaning of the performance. Going into small groups was a key part of the day, and helped us be more vulnerable in sharing parts of ourselves we wouldn't usually in a larger group.’
• Life situations: ‘The scenarios were effective in conveying the meaning of making choices and how they differ for each person in a unique way. They were also funny enough to be remembered, and also called for audience participation and interaction that kept us students engaged and entertained, which I think is important to maintain the attention of a bunch of kids.’
• Personal testimonies: ‘The testimonials helped to create a more meaningful session and made it more serious, allowing the audience to adjust to the mood and introspect on their own experiences, as well as hearing how God helped other people in their lives. The testimonials also helped us reflect on our own experiences and shed light on other perspectives.’
• Prayer: ‘It allowed us to enter the space with God and understand how he works in his space, which then translated into us learning about the choices in life and what they mean for each person individually.’

VET Sport, Aquatics & Recreation Sports Tournaments with Great Ryrie Primary School

Throughout Term 2 we have worked closely with Great Ryrie Primary School to run 3 separate Sport Tournaments.

Aquinas students were assigned a variety of roles including Marshall, Scorer, Fixture Coordinator, Coach and Umpire as part of their assessment for SISXPLD002 - Deliver Recreation Sessions. A group of 6-8 students were responsible for 'running the day' each Tournament and ensuring everything was running smoothly. It was great to see many step outside their comfort zone and take on their responsibilities.

I am really proud of the class who were the best version of themselves throughout each session. They were great role models, showed great initiative and had to problem solve when things didn't go as planned.

We have worked with GRPS 6 times this year as a class and are so grateful for the experiences we have working with their children.

The Soccer Tournament was a great experience, where others and I got to put our skills to work. My Sport and Rec Class got to go to GRPS and put our skills to the test, running a soccer tournament. My role was being the coordinator and I had to take charge of making sure the tournament runs smoothly. Overall the day was a positive experience of learning, fun and was definitely worthwhile - Marco V

The Basketball Tournament experience at GRPS a couple weeks back was an overall positive experience as we got firsthand experience in learning how to accurately run a tournament and manage participants. With my role as a fixture coordinator, I got to learn how to manage the overall timely aspect of the tournament with me editing game times to suit the needs of the tournament. Overall a fun and learning experience where we got to build on experiences and let the participants have some good ol fun - Sean M

A few weeks ago we had the opportunity to run a Netball Tournament for GRPS. It went differently to the other two so we ended up completing it at the 7 & 8 courts and had 4 teams playing and 2 teams completing novelty challenges. It was a great opportunity to focus on our coaching and umpiring skills, and overall a very good day - Cleo H

Aquinas Long Walk

We were thrilled to welcome students from local primary and secondary schools to join us for the annual Aquinas Long Walk as part of National Reconciliation Week, honouring the legacy of Michael Long and his journey from Melbourne to Parliament House in Canberra.

We were honoured to have Jack Perris representing The Long Walk and Lisa Moloney from the Opening the Doors Foundation join us for the walk.

With this year's National Reconciliation Week theme, "All In", it was inspiring to see students and staff from different schools coming together in unity to show their support for reconciliation.

Sean Miller and Sharon Daley accompanied seven enthusiastic Indigenous students to the 'Dreamtime at the G' AFL match between Richmond and Essendon. We began with the pre-game festival at Birrarung Marr, enjoying performances by various dancers and bands, including friend of Aquinas and visiting Year 12 seminar speaker, Scott Darlow and band. It was also a privilege to hear words of wisdom from Michael Long (OAM), Kevin Sheedy (OA), Leanne Brooke (CEO of The Long Walk Foundation), and Andrew Dillon (CEO of the AFL). The speakers strongly emphasized the critical role schools and young people play in achieving true reconciliation, and they were heartened by the high level of school representation in the crowd.

Following Michael Long’s address, he led the procession to the ‘G. Walking amongst a diverse sea of people of all ages and backgrounds, our students enjoyed the camaraderie of walking alongside fellow Indigenous students, families, and community members. While the walk was relatively short, it felt deeply symbolic. Buoyed by the inspiring speakers and the vibrant atmosphere of the festival, we felt a powerful sense of unity and a common goal: true reconciliation.

The match itself was fantastic, enhanced by incredible pre-game entertainment. Performers included ARIA winner Dan Sultan (a proud Eastern Arrernte and Gurindji man), Jem Cassar-Daley (a proud Gumbaynggirr and Bundjalung woman), and the Wurundjeri dance group Djrri Djrri, accompanied by Dunghutti-Gomeroi woman Zoe Brown-Holten and Tjapukai and Kalkadoon man David Biondi-Odo. The event featured a spectacular light show, pyrotechnics, and a moving Welcome to Country delivered by Wurundjeri Elder Uncle Colin Hunter Jnr, preceding the traditional Dreamtime ceremony dance, including players from Richmond and Essendon players.

🧡 Wearing a touch of orange, McCormack House students gathered to celebrate their patron, Sister Irene McCormack.

The day began with a special liturgy, followed by a raffle fundraiser in support of the McCormack House charity. Funds raised will contribute to the ministry of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, supporting disadvantaged communities through educational and humanitarian projects.

As this is the first year with Sister Irene McCormack as the House patron, students embraced the opportunity to begin new traditions that will help shape the identity and spirit of McCormack House for years to come.

From the decorations to the food and drinks, there was plenty of orange on display as students paid tribute to their patron and House colour while making a positive difference in the wider community.

McCormack House Leaders

On the 26th of May, we went to Worawa Aboriginal College to participate in the Reconciliation Sports Carnival. We competed in a range of events including footy, netball, cross country and sprints. Our girls footy team combined with the girls from Worawa college, all of whom were really friendly and talented footballers ultimately leading our team to victory. We also had help from the one and only Eddie Betts who stepped in as coach for our second game. The netballers also went undefeated for the day and ended up winning the trophy. Overall the day was really fun. There was good music, dancing, snacks and ultimately was a great opportunity to connect with Indigenous students and appreciate their culture through a love for sport.

A great day of sport for our Aquinas Girls, who were incredible representatives of the College at the Worawa Reconciliation Sports Carnival.

Our netball team fought hard in a tightly contested game, drawing level at half time before pulling away in the second half to defeat Beaconhills by 10 goals.

In football, students joined forces with Worawa and Upper Yarra to create the ultimate team, going on to win the Grand Final against Mount Lilydale and Firbank. Congratulations also to Sport Captain Kiah, who won the longest kick competition!

A special highlight of the day was having AFL great Eddie Betts join the coaches' box as our forward line specialist!

On the 20th of May, my fellow debaters and I endeavoured on a debating competition at Tintern. We had a 'secret topic'- one that wasn't revealed to us until an hour before the debate, which was revealed to be that, "Schools shouldn't teach books more than a century old." Though having to agree with this point was not the most ideal of outcomes, through the ingenuity and teamwork of our debaters, we forged our way to a victory!
